Spotted these rather fascinating webs when leaving my local Wickes recently. Closer inspection revealed thousands of little caterpillars steadily devouring the foliage of the shrubbery they had encompassed. A quick google revealed them to be Ermine moth caterpillars who quite commonly take over whole sections of shrubbery like this in order to feed. Fascinating and creepy in equal measure..

Now that the worst of the snow has thawed it looks like a lot of the footpath have taken quite a pounding from frost heave. I presume that the combination of the already high water table and then the deep and prolonged frost have proved too much for some areas. The local council is certainly going to have their work cut out.
